Dr. Ian McLean


Education: Queen's University, Ontario Veterinary College

Dr. McLean began his career at MacKay’s Animal Hospital in 1983. He grew up in Alberta and later moved to Ontario, where he earned his Bachelor of Science at Queen’s University, followed by his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine at the Ontario Veterinary College in 1983. In his final year at the OVC, he won the K-W Kennel Club Award for proficiency in small animal medicine and surgery. Dr. McLean has a special interest in dental surgery and internal medicine.
When he's not in the office, Dr. McLean enjoys spending time with his family and their pot hound Hazel, a rescue dog from Trinidad. Dr. McLean and his family are avid skiers, and actively maintain a small tree farm near Collingwood.

Dr. Candace Waters


Education: U of Guelph BSc / Ontario Veterinary College

Dr. Candace Waters joined the MacKay's team in the fall of 2015. Dr. Waters completed a BSc in Zoology before entering the Ontario Veterinary College, graduating in 2002. She has a special interest in dentistry and surgery. When she's not practicing veterinary medicine Dr. Waters enjoys biking, reading and camping with her husband and daughter and is a proud pet parent to Scout the Labradoodle, three cats (Lily, Simon, and Lulu), and a pet rat, Lil’ Chef.

Dr. Michelle Tome


Education: University of Western Ontario BSc / Ontario Veterinary College

Dr. Michelle Tome joined MacKay’s in February of 2015. She has a BSc in biochemistry from the University of Western Ontario and graduated from the Ontario Veterinary College in 2005. Before coming to MacKay’s Dr. Tome worked in clinics in Mississauga and Toronto, as well as Emergency clinics in London and Burlington. She has a special interest in internal medicine and critical care. Dr. Tome is an accomplished equestrian and has ridden for most of her life. She rode hunter/jumper on both the Trillium and A circuit in her earlier life. She and her husband and their three children share their house with pets: Marshall, a rambunctious Labradoodle, and five cats, Dylan, Barak, Jackson, Seashell and Oyster. When she is not at work Dr. Tome can be found skiing, swimming or gardening.

Dr. Will McLean


Education: University of Guelph BSc / Ontario Veterinary College

We are very excited that Dr. Will McLean has joined his father, Dr. Ian McLean at the clinic. Will is a graduate of the University of Guelph in Biomedical Sciences and in 2019 he graduated from the Ontario Veterinary College. In his final year Will received an award for excellence in dermatology, the American Academy of Veterinary Dermatology Prize. When Will is not at the clinic he enjoys fishing, skiing, travelling and reading. William is devoted to the family dog, Hazel, a ‘Pot Hound’ rescue dog from Trinidad.

Hospital Manager



Leslie joined the team at MacKay’s in 2017. Leslie has enjoyed a variety of roles including reception, management, and marketing in both companion animal hospitals and emergency/referral clinics since 1993. Leslie obtained her Veterinary Hospital Management Certificate from St. Lawrence College. Leslie loves the challenge and rewards of managing the office at MacKay's and has particularly enjoyed meeting the many wonderful clients and their pets. When not working, Leslie enjoys travelling and spending time with her husband Dave and their two wonderful daughters. Leslie’s family also includes Daisy a Golden Doodle and Bruno a Holland Lop Bunny.

Deb is originally from Sarnia, Ontario and graduated from Centralia College of Agriculture & Technology in 1993. Her work experience & background are emergency and critical care.

When not at work, Deb comes home to her husband and her 7 rescued pets - four cats - Ozzy, Little Grey, Walter, and Darth and three dogs - Marina, Laila and Milo. If not off walking her dogs, Deb enjoys mountain biking, spending time on their sail boat, reading or spending time with family back home.

Emily is a 2017 graduate of the Veterinary Technician Program at Sheridan College and joined the MacKay’s Animal Hospital team in January 2018. Prior to MacKay’s she worked at another local companion animal hospital. The variety of roles that a veterinary technician takes on each and every day is what Emily loves the most about her job. Emily is especially interested in pet nutrition and is our go to person for questions regarding pet diets and nutrition. At home Emily enjoys the company of Meeko and Calypso the Siberian Huskies.
When not working, she enjoys hiking, camping and playing board games.

Veterinary Technician

Lesli joined the MacKay’s team in 2015. She graduated from the University of Guelph, Ridgetown Campus, with a diploma in Veterinary Technology in 2011. Lesli has a special interest in the care of surgical and hospitalized patients. She also loves getting to know the clients and having the patients become like family. Lesli has travelled extensively and worked for two years abroad as a veterinary technician. She is the proud pet parent of Chevy, a Cattle dog mix whom she describes as perfection and Patches, a DSH, also purrrfection. When Lesli is not at the clinic she enjoys hiking, photography and travelling.

Pharmacy Assistant

Carey has been a member of the MacKay’s team since 2000, when she graduated from the Animal Health Technician program at Sheridan College.
As our longest staff member, Carey knows our clients well. She has watched many of our patients grow up from puppyhood/kittenhood. Carey enjoys assisting in appointments which gives her the opportunity to get to know our clients and patients even better.
She has a special interest in veterinary pharmacy and is a proud pet parent to Marvin the cat whom she rescued through the Burlington Humane Society.
In her spare time Carey enjoys pet sitting for many of our customers and watching hockey, football, baseball and horror movies.




Ashley, a self proclaimed cat fanatic, is our most recent addition to the MacKay's team. Ashley graduated in 2018 with honours from the Veterinary Assistant programme at Seneca College. Before joining MacKay's she worked at clinics in Newmarket and Toronto. In her spare time Ashley enjoys lifting weights, swimming and and spending time with her significant other and her grandmother. Ashley's 14 year old domestic cat, Brownie passed not long ago. Her ideal pet family would include two cats and a Pomsky. We are delighted to welcome Ashley as part of our team.



Lynda joined the MacKay’s Team in May 2018 and couldn’t be happier. Lynda has worked in the veterinary field for many years and enjoys meeting our clients and their pets. From the feedback we've gotten, our clients and their pets have enjoyed getting to know Lynda too! Lynda graduated from Mohawk College as a Medical Laboratory Technologist and also from Humber College as an Emergency Medicial Technician.

Lynda has three dogs: Griffin and Savannah the busy Boxers and a little Shih Tzu named Mini Cooper.

When Lynda is not working, she enjoys cooking, gardening, and spending time with her husband and daughters.

Kaitlyn joined MacKay’s during the summer of 2018 and really enjoys being part of the team. Before moving to Burlington, Kaitlyn volunteered at a rabbit sanctuary where she helped to care for over 70 rabbits! At home Kaitlyn loves spending time with her Golden Doodle and Holland Lop Rabbit.

Chantal has been a long time member of the MacKay's team. She has worked for us for many years beginning when she was in high school and later while she was studying at university. Since completing a masters degree in nutrition, she now works in the nutrition department of a large pet food company. We are very fortunate to be able to continue to call on Chantal for help when it's needed and she's available. Chantal lives in Burlington with her three pets, Linus, a Golden Retreiver, Emily, a Ragdoll cat and Scarlett, a Himalayan cat.
